¨ The counties in this statistical area are primarily rural counties and the laborers have a very strong history of willingness to commute for jobs.   Approximately 40% of area workers commute more than ten miles, one way, for employment.

¨ Because the majority of the statistical area is rural, unemployment rates are  higher than state and regional averages.

¨ Region 6 has an underemployment rate of 27.7%. That means there are 8,935 working individuals who can be considered as part of an available labor pool in addition to the 1,126 unemployed workers in Marengo County.  A high percentage of underemployment provides a significant pool of labor with a demonstrated work ethic.

¨ Approximately 75% of workers are willing to  train for a new or better job, with the underemployed being even more willing at 81%.

¨ Educational levels are commensurate with other comparable rural counties. Marengo County has the highest percentage of high school graduates in Region 6.   The region has existing programs to provide opportunities for additional educational and workforce training.
